8 January 2024, Mr. Phipat Ratchakitprakarn, the Minister of Labour, welcomed Mr. David John Welsh, Director of the Solidarity Center’s Thailand Office, and his team, on the occasion of Minister Phipat’s assumption of the new position and to discuss the issues of labor safety and occupational health, as well as promotion of gender equality in workplace.
Minister Phipat extended his warm welcome to the Solidarity Center team and expressed his appreciation for the Center’s role in supporting the Ministry’s work on workplace safety and occupational health, promotion and protection of labor rights, elimination of discrimination, and gender equality for all workers. The Ministry stands ready to continue to work together with the Center.
“The Ministry of Labour (MOL) thanks the Solidarity Center for their assistance in resolving issues of financial compensation following [Body Fashion] company closure. We hope for continued partnership between MOL and the Center, especially to uphold and ensure the rights of Thai workers under labor laws. Minister Phipat added.
In response, Mr. Welsh expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to engage on the labor issues. The Solidarity Center has worked with the Thai government and the Ministry of Labour, in particular, on the promotion of labor rights for workers in Thailand, especially on the case of Body Fashion Company’s employment termination without severance. He appreciated the cooperation rendered by the Ministry of Labour, resulting in the compensation that those former employees were entitled to, and affirmed the Center’s readiness to work with MOL to continue to protect the Thai workers.
