The Ministry of Labor (MOL), led by Mr. Wannarat Srisuksai, Deputy Permanent Secretary and Spokesperson, went on a road show to Chon Buri Province to raise awareness of administration and protection of foreign worker’s rights under the concept “Thais and aliens must be treated equally” as well as encourage employers to legally employ foreign workers.
The opening ceremony was held on February 28, 2023, at Panus Poultry Group Co., Ltd. in Mon Nang Sub-district, Phanat Nikhom District, an agro-industrial frozen food company with over 6,500 Myanmar and Cambodian workers and 1,000 Thai workers. Participants included: Mr. Arkhom Koommoo, Director of Public Relations Division, Office of the Permanent Secretary for Labour; executives of the Ministry of Labour in Chon Buri Province; human resources management of Panus Poultry Group Co., Ltd., and foreign workers
Mr. Wannarat revealed, “Under the leadership of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Labour, the Ministry of Labour has placed great importance on administration of Cambodian, Laotian, Myanmarese, and Vietnamese migrant workers with due regard to national security and the safety of Thai people.
The Ministry of Labour, led by the Public Relations Division, Office of the Permanent Secretary, focuses on creating awareness on the protection of foreign workers’ rights among employers, businesses that employ migrant workers in the area, and local government agencies under the Ministry of Labour. This includes the minimum wage rate, medical treatment, and fair welfare from the companies to prevent human trafficking which may affect Thailand’s ranking and lower it.
“Activities in the workplace like this create knowledge and understanding of equal rights between Thai and foreign workers who are all protected by the laws of Thailand. It also underscores the Ministry of Labour and the government’s determination to prevent employers from taking advantage of foreign workers in their workplaces. This will help raise Thailand’s human trafficking ranking from Tier 2 to Tier 1 as per the Ministry of Labour and the government’s expectations.”
Mr. Wannarat also chaired the meeting of executives of government agencies under the Ministry of Labour in Chon Buri Province to monitor administration and protection of foreign workers’ rights, and urge personnel to strictly follow the foreign workers management policy.
At present in Chon Buri Province, there are a total of 221,473 foreign workers who are allowed to work according to the royal decree on foreign workers, comprising 16,488 workers under Section 62 (BOI) and 204,985 workers of four nationalities, namely, Myanmarese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese. The latter group comprises 37,094 workers who arrived under MOU and 167,891 workers according to the cabinet resolutions. During October 1, 2022 – January 25, 2023, 659 companies and 14,092 foreigners were inspected.
“The employment of legal labour will solve the problem of labour shortages, which will create labour, economic, and social security for the country. Most importantly, it will help build a good image of the country in line with the government’s policy to protect the of all workers, combat for labour in various forms, and eliminate the problem of human trafficking in labour,” concluded Mr. Wannarat.
