UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization to mark International Day to Fight against IUU Fishing in Asia-Pacific (Bangkok event) – 5 June 2019
The UN’s FAO will convene a regional event to mark the 2nd International Day to Fight against IUU Fishing in Asia-Pacific on 5 June 2019 at Thailand’s Department of Fisheries, located in the Arnon Building at Kasetsart University. Registration begins at 08:30.
Dignitaries include Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and officials from Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dept. of Fisheries, as well as the FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative, and the regional heads of two other UN and international organizations (ILO and IOM).
The three agencies, FAO, ILO, and IOM, will publish a joint statement calling on Asia-Pacific countries to join in, and step up, the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU), by acceding to the international Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) and ratifying other related instruments to protect the fisheries and well-being of those who work within the industry.
Thailand, which has acceded to the PSMA, has developed a high-tech Fisheries Monitoring and Surveillance Centre, and participants will be invited to tour an exhibition and see the centre in action.
