Labour Minister, Suchart Chomklin, together with Pairoj Chotikasathien, Director-General of the Department of Employment, and Niyom Songkaew, Director-General of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, visited Port In-Port out (PIPO) Center and Certificate of Identity (CI) Center in Ranong province as part of the Ministry’s anti-labour trafficking and migrant workers management efforts.

Minister Suchart reiterated the great importance that Thai Government attaches to the implementation of anti-labor trafficking policy and the systematic migrant workers management. His visit to the PIPO and CI centers was part of such implementation in order to tackle the labour shortage and manage the influx of illegal migrant workers after Thailand has opened the border.

“Besides the monitoring of the operation and providing support and recommendations to the Ministry’s officers, today we’re also meeting with local business owners and employers with migrant workers in order to hear their voice and clarify issues of concerns – So they can correctly follow the guidelines in accordance with the MOU on Labour Cooperation and relevant Cabinet instructions,” Minister Suchart said.

There are currently 34,111 legal migrants workers in Ranong province, of which 2,234 are Myanmar nationals who have submitted the request for work permit through the MOU process.

Following the guidelines adjustment, there has been incoming 222 migrant workers – 212 were male and 10 were female, 192 of them work at construction sites, and 30 work in the agricultural businesses.

Five Organizational Quarantine (OQ) Centers with total capacity of 930 people have been prepared to assist workers who came in through the MOU process.

The Ranong CI center has issued 40,387 certificates so far, while the PIPO center reported the in-and-out traffic at port of total 4,418 times, with 22,017 incoming workers (3,912 Thais and 18,105 foreign nationals) and 22,050 departing workers (3,828 Thais and 18,222 foreign nationals).
