Thailand’s Department of Labor Protection and Welfare (DLPW) to further enhance the efficiency of anti-labor trafficking efforts by strengthening labor inspectors’ capacity to screen the trafficking victims and forced labor victims.
July 22, 2021. Mr. Apinya Sujarittanan, Director-General of Department of Labor Protection and Welfare, presided over the opening of labor inspectors capacity-building project where he mentioned the ranking of Thailand on the 2021 U.S. Trafficking in Person (TIP) Report at Tier 2 Watch List. The Report claimed that Thailand does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, officials lacked an understanding of labor trafficking, and the government lacked standard procedures for labor inspectors to refer potential cases to law enforcement.
The Labor Ministry, under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan and Minister Suchart Chomklin, determines to continuously work to eradicate human trafficking in all dimensions. The Ministry tasked the DLPW to organize a capacity-building program, aiming to strengthen the labor inspection efficiency by enhancing labor inspectors’ capacity to screen the trafficking victims and victims of forced labor. The program focuses on increasing the understanding of labor protection law and enforcement that would lead to successful labor trafficking victim identification and referral of potential cases to multidisciplinary teams and law enforcement officers.
Due to COVID -19 pandemic, the project was conducted through teleconference. Attendees included 100 labor inspectors from Bangkok and the provincial area.
