September 3, 2019, at 0830hrs, at the Purple Room, Thai Khu Fah Building, Government House, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha on the occasion of his visit to Thailand to attend the 7th Thailand-Myanmar High Level Committee (HLC). Gist of the meeting is as follows:
The Prime Minister expressed pleasure to meet with Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces and was confident that the 7th Thailand- Myanmar HLC would become successful. He believes that various mechanisms set between the Royal Thai Armed Forces and Myanmar Armed Forces, e.g., HLC, Regional Border Committee (RBC), and Township Border Committee (TBC), would help strengthen military cooperation between the two countries in keeping peace, addressing security issues and other issues along the Thai-Myanmar border area for the sake of security and better quality of life of the people. The Prime Minister also expressed condolences over the deadly flood and landslide in Mon State last month and wished for a fast recovery to normal situation.
Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces expressed confidence in close and long-term relations between the two countries with regular exchange of high-level visits and joint activities, both at the Armed Forces and the Government levels, especially when the Prime Minister has also taken over the position of Minister of Defense. He stands ready to work together with the Thai side for the interests and prosperity of the two countries. Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces also took the occasion to express condolences over the passing of Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda, statesman and President of the Privy Council.
Both parties stand ready to join forces in solving issues at the border area, i.e., terrorism, narcotics, and IUU fishing, with the belief that these issues could not be solved by one country alone. The Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces also came to terms to expand cooperation with the neighboring countries and other countries in the region, and to exchange cooperation with each other in other areas, such as academic cooperation, and joint trainings.
Myanmar endorses Thailand’s hosting of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus in 2019 with the confidence that the latter would strive to promote security cooperation both at the sub-regional, regional, international levels, in a sustainable manner. The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation toward Myanmar Government and Armed Forces for continuing to support Thailand in various endeavors.
