The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, together with the Australia-Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons (AAPTIP) and the Australian Embassy in Bangkok co-organized Thailand – Australia Regional Workshop on “Trafficking in Persons: Victims in the Criminal Justice System” during 7-9 April 2015 at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel, Bangkok. More than 30 experts whose work are related to Victims in the Criminal Justice System from ASEAN member countries and distinguished speakers from Australia, Netherlands, UK, US and AAPTIP participated in the workshop.
The opening address were delivered by Mr. Songsak Saicheua, Director-General of the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and Ms. Octavia Borthwick, Charge d’Affaires ad interim, the Australian Embassy. Police General Chatchawal Suksomjitr, Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Justice of Thailand also gave a keynote address. This Regional Workshop, a project under AAPTIP, is a follow up of the result of the 4th ASEAN Workshop on Criminal Justice Responses to Human Trafficking held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2014. The expected outcome of this workshop is to build strong cooperation and support among participating countries for practitioners’ recommendations on Victims in the Criminal Justice System.
Thailand and Australia have close cooperation on anti-human trafficking in persons bilaterally and multilaterally. The two Governments have recently signed the Subsidiary Arrangement relating to the Australia – Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons (AAPTIP) on 26 January 2015.
