The Royal Thai Government News on 26 March 2015, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security held a meeting with concerned agencies, and agreed to set up two specific units to travel to Indonesia in an effort to help Thai fishermen who have been stranded on Ambon Island, Republic of Indonesia. Their missions include screening and rehabilitating those who are considered victims of trafficking in person and conduct forensic identification of the deaths. The first specific unit, consisting of 13 members and led by assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Saritchai Anekwiang, will be leaving on March 27, 2015, while the 2nd specific unit is set to leave for Indonesia on April 6, 2015. The Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta will be a liaison office in facilitating and collaborating with the Indonesian government.
After the meeting, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, Deputy Prime Minister, stated that the Thai Government was making its utmost effort in addressing the problem of trafficking in person. As of now, Thai fishing vessels which have left for offshore fishing are already registered and installed with GPS. The Deputy PM added that in the future there might be a need to discuss with Indonesian counterpart in tackling such problem. An MOU on maritime security might be considered. On migrant fishermen who have been stranded together with the Thais, Gen. Prawit said further detail needed to be discussed on the matter since bringing them back would involve complication on national verification. Therefore, priority of the two specific units in traveling to Indonesia will be Thai fishermen. The Deputy PM also called for the media to report only facts on the Government’s mission to help Thai fishermen. This is in order for the global community to be aware of utmost effort of the Thai Government in addressing the problem of trafficking in person.
