BANGKOK, 26 March 2015 (NNT)- 21 Thai fishermen who were victims of human trafficking in Indonesia are expected to return to Thailand tomorrow.
According to Director-General of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, Peerapat Pornsirilertkit, the fishermen will be arriving at Don Muang Airport on board Airasia flight QZ252 from Jarkata, Indonesia, at 9.15 am at
Labor Minister General Surasak Kanjanarat has instructed the Department of Employment (DOE) and the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW) to welcome and offer them career advice.
The DOE will investigate and establish whether their employments in Indonesia were obtained legally, while the DLPW will assure that they are to be paid based on the number of hours they worked on the fishing boat.
The government has since November of last year assisted and facilitated the return of 32 Thais stranded on the Ambon Island, Indonesia. 13 of them have been paid a combined amount of 908,760 baht their employers owed them. Currently, there are 19 fishermen remaining in Indonesia waiting to return to Thailand.
